Writing Across the Curriculum

Goals, objectives, and activities

I currently teach in second grade this year, but I loop with my classroom and generally keep most of my students for 2 years. I am interested in expanding and honing my expertise in writer’s workshop. In the past I have used Lucy Calkin’s Small Moment Writing K-2 to guide my instruction with my students along with the Beth Olshansky’s Picture Writing Program. The Picture Writing Program allows students of different learning styles to create paintings, which are used as a springboard for writing. During the artistic process with watercolor crayons and paints, the children create rich language or “silver dollar” words within their small moment stories (personal narrations) and informational texts. This process supports all learners, but in particular learners who struggle with finding the words in the writing process. Lucy Calkin’s latest Units of Study in Opinion, Information and Narrative Writing Series for grade 1 and grade 2 will dovetail beautifully with the Picture Writing, is aligned by grade level to the Common Core, will support Title 1, Special Education, and ELL writers. It will assist me in using mentor texts, create mini-lessons, assess writing, and inform my instruction, in addition to helping my students to read as writers and write across the curriculum. I will be able to share and collaborate with the other first and second grade teachers with these materials.



How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)

This project will be evaluated by using the checklists incorporated within the Lucy Calkin’s curriculum and will help me to assess and guide my instruction. The second grade team will be administering response to literature writing and process writing pieces for the students’ portfolios as part of the Language Arts Assessment Timeline this year.


Benefit to the students and the school

This curriculum will support all learners and is aligned with the Common Core. It will develop the students’ writing skills for narrative stories, informational writing, and opinion pieces, in addition to working on reading as writers, developing vocabulary, and expanding their speaking and listening skills through conferencing across the curriculum. I will be able to continue to use this curriculum in the future.


Budget (Please detail how funding will be used. Itemize as appropriate.)

I have personally purchased the Lucy Calkin’s Units of Study in Opinion, Information and Narrative Writing Series with the trade book pack for second grade, because I wanted to start this program right away. There were no funds for this program in the budget. So I am looking for reimbursement of this program and to be able to purchase the first grade unit which I can share with my looping partner who is currently in first grade. The cost of the unit was $208.09. I believe that the cost of the first grade unit should be approximately the same. The rest of the money I would use to buy the Picture Writing Paper for the watercolor pictures, Prang watercolor paints and crayons, and laminate pockets to be able to publish and bind the children’s stories.


Timeline of Project (when will you do the project, if applicable.)

I plan on beginning this project as soon as the second grade unit of study is shipped. I’m awaiting an email for shipment verification.
