The Tassle is Worth the Hassle

Project Description
The goal of this activity would be to encourage our younger students in elementary school to model behavior of our high school graduates. The idea is to have our students due a graduation march from the high school to our neighboring elementary school. Upon arrival they would be greeted by the K-3rd grade much like a pep rally. College and career readiness activities like this plant a seed for our younger students to recognize that education (the tassel) is worth the hassle. In trying to reduce the drop out rate it is imperative to build excitement at the lower levels. Many of our students work with Station Ave Elementary in internships, PE Pals and work opportunities. This enables them to see them in cap and gown prior to them leaving.

How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)
The project will be evaluated by the participation level and will be gauged long term. Creating a culture of continuing education and promoting graduation.

Benefit to the students and the school
“Graduation is a celebratory event to be shared and celebrated not only by the students but the community and other educators. When a student graduates it is not just his current teachers who feel pride it is all that have been involved. It takes a village to raise a child and it should also be celebrate by that village.
Our benefit is not only to our graduates but the impression and long term effect it will play on the younger students.”

Timeline of Project (when will you do the project, if applicable)
The t-shirt design will be created in the fall. Then in May 2018 a final count of 3rd graders will be taken and t-shirts ordered. The graduation walk will take place on June 8th after our school senior’s last assembly.
