Goals, objectives, and activities
We wish to create a live sundial using attractive plantings bought locally. The Algebra and Pre-Algebra classes will design and engineer the sundial so as to have a maximum visual presence at the entrance of our school. The sundial will be located within easy access to our student body who will be able to observe it each day. This will allow younger students to experience a working sundial and also observe the use of Roman Numerals. The project will also allow the eighth grade math students to experience a practical application of concepts learned during their math class this year.
How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)
The success will be gauged by the accuracy of the time, the participation of the students, the use and appreciation by our school community.
Benefit to the students and the school
The eighth grade Algebra and Pre-Algebra students will design and implement the Sunny Times project. They will need to use learned skills of measurement, geometry, artistic vision as well as skills of sweat equity and cooperation. The project will require a great deal of teamwork by the students. With this project they will brainstorm ideas and then plan and revise the project. They will learn how to make purchases and keep within budget. They will need to research plants whose growth characteristics that will be successful in this environment. The students will research other sundials and eventually combine their agreed upon ideas in landscape design. They will work from drawn to scale plans and then create a 3D model before breaking ground and making purchases.
