Eddy Elementary School
Activities will include viewing the night sky through telescopes, flashlight reading under the stars, solar system games and space art stations. Students and families will have an opportunity to gaze at the night sky with telescopes obtained through local libraries, as well as identify various planets and constellations with school owned iPads using astronomy apps. Flashlights will be provided in an outside reading station with various books about the solar system. The art stations will include creating a moon necklace based on the moon phase of their birth date, a planet key chain created with beads and a glowing constellation jar map. In the space game stations students will engage in a planet order bean bag toss and an iPad solar system game. Students who participate will receive a constellation card and as they move through the stations they will receive a stamp. Students will earn a space themed prize for completion of all stations. This is sure to be an out of this world experience for our school community.
How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)
The success of our project will be based upon community turn out and feedback.
Benefit to the students and the school
The families will leave with a better understanding of our solar system through this experience, as well as completed projects which reinforce the topic and skills.
Timeline of Project (when will you do the project, if applicable)
In the late winter or spring of 2020, families at the Eddy Elementary in Brewster will be invited to a night under the stars to extend knowledge of space and provide an engaging school-to-home experience. The books purchased will be donated to our school library for continued use and enjoyment throughout the years.
