Science to Go

BY Patricia Marchant

Eastham Elementary School

Kids love science! However, when they leave school, many do not have the tools needed to explore beyond school hours. That’s where Science to Go comes in.  Science to Go consists of theme based science backpacks, loaded with things needed to explore the world of science.  One backpack will be the “Birders Bag” with a field guide, binoculars,Birdsong Identiflyer and cards, seed, and directions for making a feeder. Another will be “Weather Watcher” with a mini weather station to set up in the user’s yard. Newton’s Knapsack will be available for students who love experimenting with physical science.  What about magnets? Yes! We’ll have a backpack for that too, plus more, should funds be available. The goals for this project is to engage students in learning science outside of the classroom setting. They can work at their own pace and discover what interests them. The objective is to open their eyes to the world of science outside of the classroom by using the tools and activities in the Science to Go bags.

How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)

The success of the project will be determined by the popularity of the bags.  We will have a sign out system.  Both parents and child will agree to treat the contents of the bags respectfully, share what they learned in a journal that will stay in the bag and go home with each child that signs it out, plus an agreement that the bag will be returned on time and in good order.

Benefit to the students and the school

As stated above, this will allow children to explore science outside of the classroom, beyond that 45 minute period where everything needs to be shared with a group of students, and time marches on.  I hope that this will be a growing program with more backpacks added yearly.

Budget (Please detail how funding will be used. Itemize as appropriate.)

four $25 backpacks=$100

contents of Birders Bag=$100

contents of Newton’s Knapsack=$100

contents of Weather Watcher=$100

contents of Magical Magnets=$100

Should the contents not be as costly as predicted (i.e., Magical Magnets) funds will be used to create another Science to Go kit.

Timeline of Project (when will you do the project, if applicable.)

I plan on ordering the supplies needed as soon as the funding is available.  Once the materials have arrived, I will inform parents of the program and begin the sign out immediately.
