Goals, objectives, and activities

The goal of the “Raising Readers in Dennis and Yarmouth” project is to offer preschool age children (along with their parents, caregivers, and/or preschool teachers) opportunities and experiences that promote development of language competency, pre-literacy skills, and enhanced cognitive development. Our objectives include (1) increase parent/caregiver involvement in reading “with” children (not just “to” children) and(2) increase opportunities for private nursery school/daycare children and staff to experience the Dennis-Yarmouth Early Literacy “Bookmobile”. Often children who attend full time nursery school/daycare centers do not have opportunities to visit the local libraries. The bookmobile is a traveling library/classroom. The bookmobile visits to local preschool classrooms will be used to distribute/circulate materials purchased with funds from this grant.

How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)

The project will be evaluated by parent and staff (early education teacher recipients from center-baseed programs) using surveys that are designed to give critical feedback. The information gathered will be used for future program improvement and/or development. Increased interest and participation in the program with each month (Feb – April) will also be used to gauge ‘success’.

Benefit to the students and the school

Children in Early Education classrooms from private and public school sites will gain foundation skills that promote early literacy success. These children will enter public school kindergarten ‘ready’ to grasp the concepts emphasized by the MA Core Standards (i.e. phonemic awareness, vocabulary skills, etc.). Parents will become more engaged in their child’s early education, particularly language and literacy skills, because they will understand their role/importance as partners with educators, and they will feel capable of implementing the program (using the materials).
