We have been inspired by a teacher at a school in Fayettville, NC who had the idea to paint positive images and quotes in common areas such as bathrooms. Her goal was to spread positivity, and inspire kindness. http://abcnews.go.com/Lifestyle/woman-paints-motivational-messages-middle-school-girls-bathrooms/story?id=49976935
Our goals are to improve students’ self-image with positive quotes and affirmations painted on our school walls, as well as to increase kindness in our school community. The objective is to have students begin to notice the self-talk they use and to focus on the positive. According to studies, high self-esteem helps students to view themselves as active and capable. They will be better able to make changes through effort and set higher goals which will result in increased learning.
Activities will include surveying students for positive messages, students choosing messages and locations in our building, collaborating with Sandwich High School students to implement the designs. The final activity is painting and unveiling, after which we will reflect on the intended purpose of our “Positive Reflections” project.
How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)
We will observe an increase in students’ self-image, kindness, and confidence. Students will engage in conversations about the images that they observe around the school. Ultimately, with a kinder, more positive-minded student body, our hope is that we will observe an increase in student achievement.
Benefit to the students and the school
This project will benefit our student body in the area of social/emotional health and self-image. By improving students’ self-esteem, we can expect an overall improved feeling and culture in our school community. Students with higher self-esteem are better able to make positive decisions.
Timeline of Project (when will you do the project, if applicable)
Once funds are awarded we will begin as soon as possible. We will share examples with students and have students submit quotes that they would like to be included. Students will vote on which quotes to use in which part(s) of the building. We will collaborate with Sandwich High School Art Honor Society and schedule those students to come and do the actual painting. We expect to be finished with this project by March.
