Our Kenyan Pen Pals

Cape Cod Lighthouse Charter School

Project Description

Sixth grade students at CCLCS have started a pen pal exchange program with students from Machakos, Kenya. During the year, we will be writing letters, sharing photos, creating videos, and exchanging mementos from our communities. Each letter will revolve around a different theme – family, education, health, environment, etc. The goal is to foster friendships and create an understanding of different cultures and ways of life.

How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)

We will continue and maintain communication throughout the entire school year. If postal speed is as expected, we will be exchanging letters, photos, and mementos every six weeks. We will also give the students an opportunity to continue their pen pal relationship after the school year ends.

Benefit to the students and the school

Having pen pals from other countries and cultures..
– Broadens their world prospective and their role as global citizens
– Contributes to them having a better understanding of different ways of life
– Allows them to self-reflect on their own culture and country
– Creates compassion, appreciation, and empathy

Timeline of Project (when will you do the project, if applicable)

The pen pal program will begin starting at the beginning of October, and it will run through the entire school year and officially end in June.
