Not a Box

Project Description

We hosted a very successful “Just Me and My Dad” campout last spring and were thrilled and encouraged that when we specifically invited the Dad’s to our program they came and had a great time with their children. This year we would like to use Antoinette Portis’s book “Not a Box”, to provide a special night out for Dad’s and their preschoolers. We will have a collection of boxes for the father/child team to choose and then we will have them go to a station to make it in to some kind of housing, vehicle, robot, mountain..they will use their imagination to create a new use for their box with their child. Following the work time we will read “Not a Box” and give each family a box to put their dinner in (provided by Whole foods) and a box of milk or juice.

For many school events, most of the participants are the mothers, as the fathers often seem to feel excluded. By specifically inviting the father’s, and planning activities geared to helping them succeed with their children, we have been successful in involving whole families.

How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)

The project will be evaluated by documenting the process through pictures and interviews with the participating families.

Benefit to the students and the school

This project will help our families think outside of the box by taking an ordinary object that is readily accessible to any family and show them what is possible. This project will inspire and encourage families to be creative, take risks and have fun!

Timeline of Project (when will you do the project, if applicable)

We would like to invite the families in for the event on an evening in May.
