Multipurpose gloves, redesigned backpacks, and spacesuits using bio-mimicry

Project Description

Students will learn about the structure and function of plants and animals.  They will use this knowledge to design a multipurpose glove, redesign a backpack or create a spacesuit for astronauts to wear on Mars.

The 4th graders will design a multipurpose glove that will help them with daily activities using bio-mimicry (animals).

The 5th graders will use plants structures and functions to design a spacesuit that can be worn on Mars (bio-mimicry plants).

3rd graders will use animal bio-mimicry to redesign a backpack.

All students participating will be making either a prototype or a functioning product.

Each grade level will learn about the design process and 3 and 4 will go through a simulated manufacturing plant.

Each grade level will also have a writing component.  For 4th and 5th graders the focus will be on persuasive essays and argumentation.

Third graders will focus on descriptive pieces and informational writing.

How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)

The 5th graders will create advertisements (videos) to be played to the grade level to be voted on.

4th graders will be presenting to a “Shark Tank” to see if their glove will be purchased.

3rd graders will test their designs. using the younger children.

Each group will have certain tasks that will need to be completed before the final project is done.

There will be checkpoints that need to be completed and a self evaluation at the end.

The 5th graders will have comment cards from their peers for their teams work.  The 4th graders will have evaluations from teachers(The Tank) on how well they presented and the creativity of each glove.

The 3rd graders will have comments from the younger children done without names for both sides.

Benefit to the students and the school

The children will get to participate in real world type engineering activities and be able to share their products at an engineering night in April where all parents, community members, staff can view their work.

Engineering and product design is a part of our society and the children will get to use their imaginations and show their creativity designing projects that incorporate the science concepts  in a new and interesting way.  They will also be using writing, reading and math skills along the way.  It is atotally integrated project for these grade levels.

Timeline of Project (when will you do the project, if applicable)

This project will start in January and run through March with a final night in April.
