Multi-Sensory Learning

Project Description

Students learn differently and require different stimuli to learn. I will be using these multi-sensory learning tools to help ALL children succeed. These various tools such as sand, multi-sensory screens, grapheme card packs, etc. will help stimulate the brain in various ways. This will help all students practice their phonics in a fun, hands on way that will help them to become successful readers. The fluency activities, daily word ladders and phonics through poetry will help to reinforce the skills in a fun, interactive manner.

How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)?

Through every day observations in small group work, I will be able to see if these multi sensory tools are helping my students learn and remember the phonics skills taught. If my students are able to apply the skills learned with the tools into their reading and writing, then I will know these multi sensory tools are benefiting them. I will also be able to use the assessments from my classroom to see if the multi-sensory tools are helping my students retain their skills.

Benefit to the students and the school

Research shows that all students learn best through multi-sensory learning, especially those who have learning challenges. I find that all too often our students are taught by sitting and listening, and rarely through visual, auditory and kinesthetic ways. Students with learning challenges often need various stimuli to take in the information. I teach in an inclusive classroom and I need to have materials that allow me to reach all the various types of learners. In addition, my first grade team implements flexible grouping where we work with all students in the grade on various skills. I will be able to use these multi-sensory tools for all students who require some extra kinesthetic reinforcement.

Timeline of Project (when will you do the project, if applicable)

These multi-sensory activities will be used daily for phonics lessons and spelling and sight word activities. These materials will be able to be used every year once they are purchased.
