It’s For the Birds

Hyannis West Elementary School

Project Description

Goal: To create an environment that will attract various species of birds to feeders and birdhouses outside our classroom window. The students will plant bulbs and plants, and they will maintain the bird feeders as well as record data and keep a journal. They will witness first hand the cycles of nature.

Objective: Students will use IPads to take pictures of the birds at the feeders or in the houses. They will keep data on the colors of birds seen, how much seed the birds are eating, and eventually they types of birds that are attracted to our feeders.

How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)

Evaluation will be ongoing through the students data collection and record keeping in their journals.

Benefit to the students and the school

Observing nature promotes curiosity, helps strengthen observational skills, and helps students build respect of living things. The school benefits as the area will add to the overall appearance of the school.

Timeline of Project (when will you do the project, if applicable)

This project will be on going throughout the school year.
