Innovation – Lego Creativity Center

Project Description

Minot Forest Elementary School has moved into Wareham Middle School.  I work with students in grades 3-7 at both schools. We are working to transform our library space to a creative space that includes all domains under the STEAM umbrella.  Students will be creating in multiple ways in this space demonstrating their learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math.  For the purpose of this grant application, the focus will be on creating a Lego creativity space which includes a Lego wall, Lego tables and room for students in grades 3 through 7 to explore, grow, demonstrate creativity, math, engineering and science concepts as well storytelling and art.  Students and their teachers visit this space regularly for guided activities and individual activities for students to explore and express themselves. A Lego wall will provide the students with a vertical space on which to build to show their ideas individually and collaboratively. It will give students a new space and perspective to show what they know increasing student voice which is one of our district and school goals.

How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)?

We will know the Lego wall is a success through conversation, demonstration and creative expression with and from our students.

Benefit to the students and the school

For our students in grades 3 and 4 it is an introductory space for them to plan and execute their ideas.  Students will benefit from watching and making their thoughts into a concrete model using the STEAM process to guide their thinking.  Using Legos to design and build will be an outlet and different sort of experience than they may be a part of in a classroom space. Students utilizing this space will be immersed in many creative outlets going on around them which include a Maker Space, Reading Nook, Puppet Theater and more that are also currently being designed.  Our older students have been immersed in STEAM academies and curriculum and now they will join the younger students in a creative space to utilize different modalities to implement the Engineering Design Process. This same space is also used by different community groups and we are excited for them to see the multiple ways our students can create and be creative.

Timeline of Project (when will you do the project, if applicable)

This project will be implemented this school year and students will be visiting and using the space during the school day.
