Graphic Novel Our World

Project Description

The graphic novel section of the East Falmouth Elementary School Library currently contains 142 books, which accounts for approximately 1.40% of our print collection.  However, these 142 books also account for approximately 10.97% of all of the library books that are circulated each month of the school year.  It is the goal of the East Falmouth Elementary School Library to strengthen and expand this small part of our library’s print collection to offer a larger variety of books to our students, including biographies, informational (nonfiction) texts, and more.

Graphic novels are written using a large variety of vocabulary, making them accessible to all students in our library.  For students who have a difficult time comprehending and understanding a chapter book or general nonfiction books, they feel a sense of accomplishment and pride when they finish reading an entire graphic novel.  Additionally, all graphic novels use pictures and illustrations to help tell their stories, making them a unique section of our library.

How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)

The primary evaluation of this project will consist of the circulation statistics for our library.  This information can be found through Follett Destiny, our online library catalog.  Each month the statistics will be viewed to determine the number of books that were circulated the previous month.  Additionally, the number of books that have been circulated can be viewed on the library shelves, with how full or empty they are each day and week.

Benefit to the students and the school

The benefit to our students and school will be tremendous.  Not only will our school community gain an expanded section of our library, but our students will also have an opportunity to further explore different subject areas they previously might not be familiar with.  Students who also have had limited exposure to graphic novels will have an opportunity to read more of this genre of literature found in our library.

Timeline of Project (when will you do the project, if applicable)

The timeline for this project will occur from January 2016 – June 2016.  We will monitor the circulation statistics for the graphic novel section of our library, and ask our students for feedback regarding the new titles they will have the opportunity to choose from.
