ELF (Early Literacy Fundamentals)

WELLFLEET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The Early Literacy Fundamentals Program is a unique literacy “School-to-Home” program for all Kindergartners and First Graders.  This program, nicknamed ELF, provides narrative and expository books for families to keep so that they can begin to build or add to a home library.  The goal of this program is to help children develop a love of Reading…a love of Learning.

The objective of this program is to provide early readers books at no cost to families.  In previous years, the only requirement to participate was for the parent(s) to accompany the child to the ELF Corner at least once a month, but no more than four times a month.  Last year, so as not to penalize the many children whose parents were unable to accompany them to the ELF Corner, that requirement was waived and the restrictions on attendance were lifted.  All kindergarten and grade-1 students, whether or not they chose a book with a parent, were invited to visit the Corner each week with their classrooms to ensure that no child would be deprived of the opportunity to select a book to keep as his.  There was positive feedback from parents, teachers, and children alike regarding this new procedure.

How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)

The program will be evaluated via parent-child &/or teacher-student attendance and feedback.  Attendance and user comments are tracked through a log book, which is available for parents &/or students to sign.

Benefit to the students and the school

-To open the world of imagination for children
-To expose children to informational as well as narrative texts
-To afford parents the opportunity to foster positive interaction in the joy of reading

Budget (Please detail how funding will be used. Itemize as appropriate.)
