Creative Writing with Lego Story Starter

Project Description

The goal of this project is to continue and expand the writing activity that I started last year.  The students use the Lego Story Starter to put together a beginning, middle and end of a story.  I’ve used this in Language Arts as well as in math.  For language arts, the students create a scene from the story we’re reading or they can also do a free build.  After the scenes are built, the students write about their story.

How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)

The benefit has been huge.  Last year I had a student who started with me writing stories that were 3-5 sentences long because he couldn’t think of what to write.  After using the Lego story starter, he was writing pages of clear, rich stories.  It helped my students that I had in my class or enrichment get excited about school and writing.  Another huge benefit is with students that english is not their first language because physically creating a story helps them build a concrete story.  I would like to continue on the success of this program and offer it to more students in our school. I would continue to use it in language arts and math and I’m starting to incorporate it into social studies and science.  It really is that good.
