Coding With Blue Bots

BY Kimberly White & Tracy Aalto

West Barnstable Elementary School

Project Description

“Blue-Bot brings science, technology, engineering, and math into the classroom for even the youngest students and helps build foundational skills for lifelong learning.  Blu Bot is an exciting robot designed specifically for use by young children. This colorful, easy-to-operate, and friendly little robot is a perfect tool for teaching sequencing, estimation, problem-solving, and just having fun!”  These robots will be used to address Computer Science Technology Standards.

Some of the standards addressed are:
Students will be actively engaged in computer science activities
Students will be able to create, test and modify a program
Students will be able to use interactive debugging to detect and correct simple programming errors

How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)

Students will engage in a variety of activities during technology classes as they program the BluBots in small collaborative groups.  The success of their programs and understanding the process of creating and debugging a program will be used to evaluate the use of these robots.

Benefit to the students and the school

All students attend technology classes.  All students will have an opportunity to explore coding using their robots.  In addition, all students will engage in the problem solving model of thinking and learning.  These robots will also be available to be “signed out” by classroom teachers and incorporated into math lessons.

Timeline of Project (when will you do the project, if applicable)

The Blu Bots will be incorporated into the elementary technology lessons as soon as they are received.  The coding component of these lessons fall into our scope and pacing beginning in January.  They could be utilized any time in the math classes.
