Old Rochester Regional High School
This is a civics project for students to participate in involving a field trip to the Edward M. Kennedy
2 Institute for the Senate. Students will participate in the “Today’s Vote” activity at the institute where they play
the role of senators and debate a real, current issue on the floor of the Senate reproduction at the institute.
How will the project be evaluated (e.g. how will you gauge its success)
Success for this project involves students being able to explain the pro and con facts about a real issue before the
United States Senate and form a clear opinion, supported by facts in a summarization of the debate held on the
replica Senate floor and of their position on the issue.
Benefit to the students and the school
Students will learn about the issue prior to the trip, do research on the issue and decide where they stand on it.
Timeline of Project (when will you do the project, if applicable)
We plan to visit the institute in December of 2019. The institute changes the topic for “Today’s Vote,” so I
anticipate researching the topic in the weeks prior to our visit and completing the follow-up to the visit the week
after the visit, in early January.
